Contract Killers #30

Andrés Lázaro

Charly came to Madrid to pay a visit a mutual friend, who asked me to show her around. We went to see an exhibition, I took this photograph on the roof of the museum. I had already taken her portrait earlier that day, and I didn’t want to bother her again. But the light was rather nice and the location seemed fitting. The sun was about to set so I rushed to ask for one last photograph. She posed soberly.

She’s called Pilar, she’s my friend, my lover, my wife.

Short description of her: cheerful, crazy, tenacious, emotional.

This photo was taken whilst visiting a local beauty spot with my family. I’ve been going to this place since I was a child.

I always loved these trees and their knotted, gnarled roots. My brother and I would spend ages trying to find the oldest dated initials carved into their bark – we always competed at everything.

So, it was with shock and quiet outrage that I discovered the felling of the 5 oldest trees. Eventually I realised that we were unlikely to ever see something similar again and so I asked my son to stand on the stump for a portrait. I’m glad I had my camera with me, I’ll miss these old friends.
